The New Zealand Government has announced an extension to the compliance deadlines for landlords under the Healthy Homes Standards.
Private landlords now have until 1 July 2025 to ensure their rental properties meet the required standards, giving them an additional year compared to the previous deadline of 1 July 2024.
Under these standards, landlords with new or renewed tenancies were initially required to comply within 90 days of the tenancy start date. This has now been extended to 120 days, providing more flexibility for landlords.
The extension comes in response to challenges caused by COVID-19, which disrupted supply chains, delayed deliveries of essential materials, and created a shortage of qualified tradespeople to complete the required work.
The Healthy Homes Standards aim to improve the quality of rental properties in New Zealand, ensuring they are warm, dry, and healthy for tenants. Key requirements include proper heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress, drainage, and draught stopping.
Tenants concerned about the compliance status of their rental property are encouraged to contact their property manager for assistance and clarification. Property managers play a key role in ensuring landlords meet their obligations and can help resolve any issues.
